Buying a Tandem Double Buggy

A tandem double buggy can be a fantastic option if you have twins, or children who are close in age. They are narrower than side-by-side buggies and are ideal for small spaces such as doorways, public transport and rocky terrain.

Some can be converted to travel systems that use two carrycots or child car seats. However, they are heavier and longer than single pushchairs and may not be as stable when in bumping up the kerbs.

Convertible

If you’re looking for a convertible single-to-double stroller or want to add a second seat to an existing one, there are a variety of options available. The UPPAbaby V2 is spacious, gorgeous stroller. It can be easily converted from a single to a dual by adding a Rumble seat. It is more expensive and less maneuverable because the second seat is located on top of the first seat. Nuna Demi Grow provides a similar choice, but it lacks storage under the seat when it is used as a double prams with shock-absorbing suspension stroller.

Other options include twin buggies with all-terrain wheels, and joggers with fixed wheels that can accommodate two kids. They are more expensive, but they are designed for long-distance trips over rough terrain and have more expensive resales.

Independent seat recline

If you’re looking for a double buggy to carry children of different ages, you’ll want one that has recline independent for both seats. This allows your older child to be able to relax while your baby is in the bassinet, and vice versa.

You’ll also need to think about the size of the stroller as this will impact how easy it is to get through doors and on public transportation. If your doors are narrow, you may be considering a side-by-side pushchair such as the Mountain Buggy Duet. It has a footprint similar to a single stroller however can still fit two seats and car seat adaptors.

Tandem buggies are usually a little longer than side-by-side models and so aren’t as easy to manoeuvre around kerbs however, they can accommodate a wider variety of car/car/seat combinations, and are a great option for twins or siblings of different age. They are more expensive than single-to-GYMAX Double Seat Stroller: Adjustable Push Handle Pram buggies however they’re worth it if you plan on keeping it for many years. They also hold some value if sold when your kids have outgrown the buggie.

Another crucial thing to look out for is if the backs of the seats can recline independently of each other as this will let you place your child in the most optimal position for naps or watching. This is especially important when you have a younger child in the rear seat, who will prefer to lay back and take a snooze while the older child would prefer to sit up and observe their surroundings.

Some brands have a unique design that allows the back of their vehicles to fully recline to a position that is almost flat, ideal for infants. For example the iCandy Orange has raised stadium-style seating that can recline both the toddler seat included and the additional RumbleSeat into various positions so that your children have a a choice of where to sit, as well as offering an excellent UPF 50+ canopy that has peekaboo windows.

Larger than twin buggies

They are ideal for siblings of different age groups, and you can move around without worrying about your children touching. They’re typically a little longer too with one seat placed behind the other and with a fully-flat recline option for babies (or a more upright position for toddlers).

A popular option is the Mountain Buggy Duet, which features the slimmest side-by-side design on the market and has the same footprint as a single buggy. It features an adjustable handle that makes it easier for parents to push, and a handbrake which can be useful on hills that are steep. It can be used from birth and is compatible with a variety of car seats and carrycots, meaning it is a great travel system.

The iCandy Wave is another option. It folds in either mono or duo mode with just a single click. Its clever frame can be expanded to accommodate a second chair and can be used with up to two car seats or carrycots. This makes it a great option for older siblings who wish to sit together. It’s slightly longer than some other models, but it’s easy to steer and has soft suspension that is able to handle kerbs.

There are many 3-wheeler tandems with inline wheels that offer stability and swift steering. Take a look at Phil and Teds inline models as well as iCandy Peach and Pear buggies. Most of them can be folded into the size of a single buggy, which is helpful when you have trouble storing it at home or frequently need to carry it in and out of the boot when you travel on public transport.

Be aware that a double-wide buggy will be more heavy and more bulkier than one that is compact. Be sure you know what you want prior to making a purchase. You’ll have to get it off and on subways, buses, and trains frequently, so it must be easy to operate and manage. You might also have to juggle it onto and off the car seat when taking your children to nursery or school so you’ll need to know it’s easy to maneuver in small spaces.

From your birth, you are a good candidate

If you’re expecting twins, or you have a child following your first, you’re likely to require a stroller that can accommodate the whole family. Double buggies are typically heavier, bulkier, and more expensive than single strollers. However, they are easier to maneuver in tighter doorways or around obstacles such as curbs. They are also compatible with piggyback ride-along boards (either from the manufacturer or through an accessory purchase) which means you can carry three children at once.

Tandem pushchairs place one child ahead of the other. They’re a great choice if your children are similar in age and are able to get along. They’re not completely safe. Siblings who are sitting side-by-side could punch or kick one another and children of different heights can fight over who is sitting higher. A tandem high-low model could solve this problem by elevating the seat towards the rear, preventing your child’s height from being on the bottom and not getting the best view.

The iCandy Wave is a good choice for parents looking for a convertible double buggy with a carrycot that can fit both the newborn and the older child. It features a smart frame that expands in width when you add the second seat and folds down to flattish storage. The seats are cushioned and comfortable, the straps are easy to fasten, and the buckles some of the best we’ve seen on any of our tests. The canopies are large in size with UPF 50+ protection, as well as a windows that peek out. Both seats are reclined independently.

The only downside to the iCandy tandem is that it’s quite expensive. However, a quality tandem will last for years and retain a high resale price, so at the end of the day you’ll likely recover some of the cost. It doesn’t come with the same selection of seating configurations that some of our other top picks, but the iCandy is a good option for families who don’t wish to spend a lot.
