If your Jaguar XF key fob is not working anymore or has an effective range that has diminished it’s time to replace the battery. Here’s how to do it.

Keyless Entry System

Consider upgrading to keyless entry on your Jaguar XE if you’ve ever spent an hour or so digging in your pockets or purse to find your keys, before making your way to the door. This feature adds a level of convenience and safety to your Jaguar vehicle that a lot of people appreciate. The Jaguar key fob will detect when you are within range of your XE. With the key fob within close proximity, grabbing any door handle or pressing the release button on the luggage compartment will unlock your car.

Your Jaguar key fob is equipped with an electronic chip that enables it to communicate with the Jaguar’s system, unlock the doors open, operate the windows and sunroof and even remotely start your engine. The key fob comes with rubber seals that guard it from water damage. However, it’s essential to remove it from its holder to clean any electronic components that are exposed with isopropyl and a paper towel. Submerging your key fob into salty or soapy water can affect the circuitry and need the replacement.

The Jaguar XK key fob also can be used to “double lock” your vehicle, providing extra security against theft. However it is possible that your jaguar xf key fob cover key fob could be inoperable due to a variety of reasons, such as an empty coin battery within the key fob or an unpaired key that needs reprogramming by the dealer.

Transponder Chip Keys

Jaguar launched a brand new key type in 1998. This key required specialized equipment to program. These keys come with a transponder chip in them that disarms the vehicle’s standard immobiliser system. They need to be integrated into Jaguar’s database of keys, which is typically handled by a dealer or locksmith. Contrary to popular belief, not all dealers or locksmiths are equipped to handle these kinds of keys. Some have even been known to charge excessively Jaguar customers for their services.

Tibbe Keys

Some Jaguars in the 1990s had a type of key called a Tibbe key. They require special equipment because they have flat cuts with precise angles on four different sides. These keys are not interchangeable with regular keys, and a majority of locksmiths do not have the equipment to cut them. This can result in extended waiting times for owners who require replacements. Dealerships may also reduce them but charge a significant amount.

The lock itself is interesting, as it consists of either 6 or 8 rotary discs that have to be aligned correctly for the sidebar to slide into position and allow access to the trunk or door lock. This is done using a special pick/decoder that looks like it’s a drill. This process can be difficult. This tool should only be used on the DOOR lock, not on the trunk or ignition lock.

There are a handful of locksmiths who specialize in Tibbe keys and their costs depend on a variety of factors like time, effort, consumables, equipment, etc. The specialized adapter kit required to work with these kinds of keys can cost several hundred dollars, and they has to be set up by hand (or an experienced programmer could create it using a computerized key machine) for each new key that is created.

Key Fob Battery Replacement

Most battery packs for key fobs wear out in time, and it’s important to keep an extra one in the case. The easiest way to know that it’s time to replace is when the key fob no more responds to push buttons. Your Message Center may also alert you that the battery is low.

It’s easy to change the battery on your Jaguar keyfob in your garage. It only takes less than a minute. The first step is to break the fob’s door open with a flat head screwdriver or your fingernail. You can break the two seams which connect the halves of the key fob and reveal the blade.

You can turn the blade of the key back after the fob is opened to reveal the battery that was previously in use. It’ll look like tiny coins with the battery’s size and a plus and minus signs embossed on one side. Make sure you insert a new battery of the same kind and make sure that it’s properly oriented.

Make sure you only touch the battery from the sides. When you touch it from the top or bottom could cause moisture to be transferred, reducing battery life. Reassemble the fob and test the buttons on the remote to see if they work again. If not, contact your local Jaguar Annapolis service pros for additional assistance.
